Project-car math usually begins with the purchase price. Then come transport, parts, tires, fluids, tools, upholstery, paint, machine work, and the surprise invoice that arrives right when you thought the hard part was over. One line item gets skipped too often: space.
Garage space is not just where a car sits. It is where decisions get easier or harder. A cramped bay turns simple work into a puzzle. No lighting makes every inspection worse. No dry storage means new parts become old parts before they ever reach the car. A project without enough space can lose momentum even when the owner has the money and the motivation.
Before buying a car, picture the worst week of the build. The interior is out. The front end is apart. The parts you ordered are late. The car cannot move under its own power. Can it stay where it is without creating a crisis? Can you still get around it? Can you close the door?
That does not mean every enthusiast needs a dream shop. Plenty of great cars have been saved in one-car garages, carports, shared spaces, and borrowed corners. The point is to match the project to the space honestly. A running driver with weekend needs is different from a shell that needs to sit on stands for a year.
Storage for removed parts matters too. Bag and label hardware. Keep trim safe. Photograph assemblies before they come apart. A project can stall because a rare clip disappeared, not because the owner lacked passion.
Budget for space the same way you budget for parts. Make the room, make the plan, and give the car a place where progress can actually happen.
